Artist Statement
Although I’ve worked mostly with charcoal, I wanted to explore different media and started working with acrylic paint. However, with my graphic design background, I was interested in the effects of layers and transparency and began painting on glass. Adding various layers through different media, similar to a collage style, I was able to create dimension and depth to my work.
Khmer Apsara in Traditional Pose
Acrylic on glass and hand-spun, cotton sinh from Xieng Khouang, Laos
This piece celebrates my first trip to Southeast Asia. The image of the Khmer Apsara adorns the walls of Angkor Wat and represents the beauty of Cambodian culture. This hand-made "sinh" (fabric) from Xieng Khouang was purchased right off the loom and reminds me of the perserverence of Laotian tradition.
Thai Icon
Acrylic on glass, dried flower petals and paper
Over time, this particular image has become an iconic figure in Thailand. The apsara is a celestial figure in Thai culture and is reminiscent of the guardian angel in Judeo-Christian tradition. I created this piece for my sister, who has been my guardian angel.
